Build Your Own Strategy Parade
Whilst I am a firm believer in having a strong process as the foundation for strategic planning and management – and believe me I use one on every strategy management project – a process is useless without the right leadership and culture to transform it into reality.
There is only so much improvement that one can get out of a process, and processes can easily be copied so they present little opportunity as a competitive advantage to an organisation. This is why I am such a strong believer in building strong, authentic leadership across an organisation. This is a true sustainable, competitive advantage. This is one of the most fundamental aspects of business today that is going to determine who wins or fails. And by leadership, I don’t mean management. If you see a parade and jump in front of it, you aren’t leading those people anywhere unless you take them somewhere the parade wasn’t originally going to go.
Take a moment and consider where you are leading your people on your business’s strategic journey. Have you even shown them the desired destination? It seems like such a basic thing to do, and yet so many managers haven’t. And If you have, are you trying to push your people towards it? Or you still hoping that they will magically find it on their own? Or are you building the desire and skills within your team so that they join you – with enthusiasm – in your parade?
